The streets around Plumstead are ripe for expansion and improvement, a fact that is attracting keen interest. Located just south of Woolwich, the river is not too far away and there is a historic Common that is great for walking, cycling and picnicking. Construction of the maintenance depot at the Elizabeth Line in Plumstead started in March 2012, replacing a former station goods yard. The depot is now fully operational and plays an important role in servicing and maintaining the new Crossrail Elizabeth Line trains. Young families are drawn to the good schools and the thriving main thoroughfare features lively pubs and an eclectic culinary scene.
There is a healthy mix of architecture in Plumstead. Victorian and Edwardian terraces dominate the area around the high street and the railway station. Genesta Road is home to a quirky collection of 1930s modernist houses. For new builds, one has to look northwards to the Royal Arsenal Riverside, a new property development overlooking the Thames at Woolwich. The properties overlooking Plumstead Common are the area’s most sought-after as they offer elevated views of the Southeast London skyline and are somewhat larger than those near the High Street.
Plumstead Station runs a mainline rail service to the City via London Bridge and to Charing Cross for trips to the West End. The new Elizabeth Line makes a short bus ride to Woolwich essential as high-speed trains from there take just 8 minutes to reach Canary Wharf and travel right through Central London to Heathrow Airport.
